Never had we ever considered adoption as a way to grow our
family much less START our little tribe. But God had a surprise for us; he
placed someone into our lives who would change our hearts and life path
forever. We are currently in the process of becoming a licensed foster home for
a very specific little girl. No matter what the outcome we know that this
chapter of our life has a purpose and we are going to be obedient; trusting it, living it, and enjoying.
What was supposed to be a temporary arrangement turned into
a permanent weekly routine. We went from caring for her on the occasional
weekend to EVERY weekend and any weekday we could manage to get off work. We loved having her around and
were in a place where we couldn’t imagine not having her in our lives on the regular.
Now I had casually mentioned adopting her to Dylan as we
began to see that reunification with her biological mother may not happen. His
initial reaction was an eye roll… But while she was becoming part of our
routine and was taking up more space in our hearts his opinion had started to
change. One day as we were driving down the road he asked who would be adopting
her and if it was too late for us to do so. As I mentioned above we had never
before considered adoption especially before we had biological children, but this
little girl had filled our hearts. So, it was my turn to react… with laughter
and frustration… why now… while I wanted to make that offer to care for her as
mom and dad and be her forever family I felt it was probably too late.
It turned out that this conversation would start several
more and our foster to adopt journey would officially begin on January 26th,
2017 as we attended our foster care orientation on her one year foster care
anniversary. We were being guided and directed the path we were about to embark on is not something we had ever imagined our lives to follow. But by now we should know better, we are not in control and God's plan is ALWAYS better than our own. There is a bible verse that I claim as "mine" it is "He has made everything beautiful in it's time." Ecclesiastes 3:11. While the circumstances of adopting from foster care are often messy and seem far from beautiful God truly has a plan. This journey will test our patients, we will experience high and lows but this is what we are lead to do at this time.
